learning delayed gratification

Is there a link between the skills associated with accepting delayed gratification and basic money management?

I have been reading some personal money management education and advice sites. All seem to suggest that this isn't very hard. You just have to realize that you need to set aside money for the future and just do it. Yes, there are suggestions like once you pay off the car loan, put the car payment money into your savings account. Others remind you "Don't touch your savings" - it all seems so easy.

Then why do most people have such difficulty with this simple program?

Are there measures for skill in delaying gratification? How well do most people do? Are good savers better at this? Are rich people better players than poor people? Does education or personality type have an influence on delayed gratification skills?

Are there ways to learn these skills? Can they be taught to adults?

I'm willing to bet that most adults today do not possess these skills to any great extent. That's why the economy is such a mess. Many people may have had these skills at some time, but they have been discouraged from using them. Perhaps a great video game or a high profile reality show will generate a lot of interest so everyone will run out to seek their fame and fortune as the next "Top Delayed Gratifier".

In the mean time, I'm looking for a way to measure delayed gratification skills and a game or training program to develop them in adults.
